This article presents the results obtained by analyzing the errors committed by first-year students in the mathematics diagnostic test at the National University, Costa Rica, in the year 2017. The research is qualitative, explanatory and descriptive. The test had 60 unique selection exercises. The students had to write down in the exam brochure all the procedures performed. A random sample of 100 tests was selected. For each item, a choice of tests was made where the students had performed some procedure and the errors were classified according to their origin: mathematical language, spatial information, incorrect inferences or associations, recovery of a previous scheme, incorrect or accidental calculations, and deficiencies in the construction or absence of prior knowledge. The students, in addition to presenting errors in the mentioned categories, presented errors in mathematical contents such as identification of the priority of operations, use of parentheses, concept of absolute value, operations with polynomials, notable formulas, and factorization, among others. The results show that the students present diverse errors and deficiencies in mathematics; therefore, it is necessary to propose strategies, at the university level, to correct this situation and ensure that students have the necessary bases to successfully face the courses of the discipline.

Un alto porcentaje del alumnado que ingresa a la universidad posee errores matemáticos que se muestran durante el proceso de construcción de los nuevos contenidos y que impacta su rendimiento académico en la disciplina. En este artículo se presentan los resultados de un estudio orientado a analizar los errores que cometió el estudiantado de primer ingreso en la prueba de diagnóstico de matemática en la Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica, en el año 2017. La investigación es de tipo cualitativo, explicativo y descriptivo. La prueba constó de 60 ejercicios de selección única. Cada discente debía anotar en el folleto de examen todos los procedimientos realizados. Se seleccionó una muestra aleatoria de 100 pruebas. Para cada ítem, se hizo una elección de las pruebas donde el estudiantado había realizado algún procedimiento y los errores se clasificaron según su origen: lenguaje matemático, información espacial, inferencias o asociaciones incorrectas, recuperación de un esquema previo, cálculos incorrectos o accidentales, deficiencias en la construcción o ausencia de conocimientos previos. El estudiantado, además de presentar errores en las categorías mencionadas, presentó errores en contenidos matemáticos como identificación de la prioridad de las operaciones, uso de paréntesis, concepto de valor absoluto, operaciones con polinomios, fórmulas notables, leyes de potencias, factorización, entre otros. Los resultados muestran que el alumnado presentó diversos errores y deficiencias en matemática, por lo que surge la necesidad de plantear estrategias, a nivel universitario, para corregir esta situación y garantizar que cada discente posea las bases necesarias para enfrentarse con éxito a los cursos de la disciplina.
