Este artículo considera las representaciones e ideología como aspectos integrales a lacreación de un desastre producido por un evento natural a partir del análisis antropológico del huracán Katrina. Los desastres no son solo una disrupción sino queilustran el orden socio-cultural normal. Analiza las conexiones entre políticas e ideologías neoliberales y la producción de la vulnerabilidad antes del huracán y las representaciones y respuestas después. Valores culturales estadounidenses forman parte dela ideología neoliberal y dieron forma a las experiencias del huracán.
