Este artículo explora las formas de adaptación al estado de la economía agrícola del siglo XXI asumidas por pequeños agricultores familiares en la región occidental del Valle Central de Costa Rica. El análisis se basa en una investigación llevada a cabo en julio-diciembre de 2017, con una metodología cualitativa a través de las técnicas de participación-observación y entrevistas a 56 miembros de familias productoras de 32 fincas. Los resultados indican que los productores convierten el proyecto de la finca en un pasatiempo o una labor a medio tiempo; o bien, intercambian de labor al insertarse en mercados de turismo, educaciónal consumidor y productos de valor agregado.
