El concepto de autogestión, referido principalmente a relaciones campesinas de propiedad comunitaria, se tornó importante en el debate político para el desarrollo rural como herramienta de modernización agropecuaria y de acceso a recursos por parte de campesinos sin tierra. El impulso, la conformación y el control de empresas comunitarias, sin ser labores exclusivas del Estado costarricense, se presentan como un espacio de confluencia de múltiples actores, negociaciones y conflictos, en los cuales los campesinos jugaron un rol protagónico. Lo anterior se analiza con base en la revisión bibliográfica, la consulta de documentación interna de las cooperativas y el diálogo continuo con el líder campesino Ernesto Pérez.
