The results of the investigation showed, first, the influence of the mobilizations from the United States and the Vatican is the catholic campaign against “inmoral cinema” in Costa Rica. Secondly, how the replication of the international catholic campaign against cinema was made posible by local moralist who historically criticized the new public entertainment. Third, the various strategies of the Costa Rican campaign to censor the "inmoral" contents of the films. Finally, a balance about the achievements and failures of the moral campaign, allowing a reflection about the cultural scope of cinema in the Costa Rican society of the period. |

La investigación estudia la censura católica de las exhibiciones cinematográficas en Costa Rica durante el periodo de 1936 a 1937. Se recurre a la prensa católica de la época para analizar el desarrollo de una campaña católica contra el “mal cine”, cuyas causas fueron producto de influencias globales aunadas con preocupaciones históricas locales. Los resultados de la investigación arrojaron, primero, la influencia de las movilizaciones provenientes de Estados Unidos y del Vaticano en la campaña católica contra el cine “inmoral” en Costa Rica. Segundo, se muestra cómo la réplica de la campaña católica internacional contra el cine fue posible gracias a las críticas moralistas locales efectuadas históricamente hacia el nuevo entretenimiento público. Tercero, se abordan las diversas estrategias de la campaña costarricense para censurar los contenidos “inmorales” de las películas. Finalmente, se realizará un balance de los logros y fracasos de tal maniobra, permitiendo una reflexión sobre los alcances culturales del cine en la sociedad costarricense del periodo. A investigação estudou a censura católica das exposições cinematográficas na Costa Rica durante o periodo de 1936 a 1937. A imprensa católica da época é usada para analisar o desenvolvimento de uma campanha católica contra o "cinema ruim", cujas causas foram o produto de influências globais associadas a preocupações históricas locais. Os resultados da investigação mostraram, primeiro, a influência das mobilizações dos Estados Unidos e do Vaticano na campanha católica contra o “cinema imoral” na Costa Rica. Em segundo lugar, mostra-se como a replicação da campanha católica internacional contra o cinema foi possibilitada pelas críticas moralistas locais feitas historicamente para o novo entretenimento público. Terceiro, as várias estratégias da campanha da Costa Rica para censurar o conteúdo "imoral" dos filmes são abordadas. Por fim, será feito um balanço das conquistas e fracassos de tal manobra, permitindo uma reflexão sobre o alcance cultural do cinema na sociedade costarriquense do período.
